UK horticultural growers face increasing pressure from crop pests, weeds and diseases, due to a combination of new non-indigenous threats, emerging pesticide resistance issues and increasing regulatory pressure on the availability and type of plant protection products.
Dr Zhou will collaborate with research groups and companies in the UK, Europe and China to spearhead big data- based solutions in the areas of crop imaging, crop phenomics and AI-based analysis to underpin the digital transition underway in the agricultural sector.
Both science and industry require new methodologies for crop phenotyping and phenotypic analysis, alongside IoT (Internet of Things) smart sensor and AI-based solutions, to address big data challenges within the global food security agenda.

NIAB Digital is a new interactive farm software platform, giving farmers and agronomists the ability to map, manage, store, share and compare farm, crop and research data, launched by NIAB at the 2017 Cereals Event.
NIAB has appointed Dr Richard Harrison as its new Director of Cambridge Crop Research.
As part of the organisation’s Centenary celebrations CEO and Director Dr Tina Barsby accompanied The Queen as she met staff in the Sophi Taylor Building Conference Centre and glasshouses at NIAB’s Park Farm field station on the outskirts of Cambridge.
It's moving week at NIAB!
Our Agricultural Crops Characterisation, Pathology, Ornamentals Crops Characterisation, Analytical Services (including NIAB LabTest), OSTS, and crop transformation teams are moving from the Huntingdon Road site into our fantastic new 'Barn 1' at our Cambridge Park Farm site over the next week or so. The University of Cambridge has elected Dr Giles Oldroyd to the Russel R Geiger Professorship of Crop Science, leading the Crop Science Centre partnership with NIAB. As Director Professor Oldroyd will be based in the Crop Science Building at NIAB’s new headquarters on Lawrence Weaver Road, opening in 2020.
The big news coming out of 2019’s Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) of the NIAB trial grounds in Cambridge is that nationally declining house sparrows are back.
The award was collected by his successor, Dr Mark Stalham. Mark too was celebrating an award of his own – scooping the Agronomy award. As David recently stepped down as Head of the NIAB CUF, it’s time to look back at his career:
